"Sonata in Mixolydian"

Trio for Oboe, English Horn, and Piano

Electronic demo here

Ah, the days of advanced music theory assignments! These memories come back to me whenever I play through this work.

The piece was originally written as a music theory class assignment in the Spring of 1996. Dr. Paul Steinberg asked each person in the class to compose a modal duet. After completing and presenting the first version of the work, I let it sit for a while. Then, after listening to it many months later, I added in a piano accompaniment and decided to lengthen the alternating time signature passages. Then, I decided to add in a long accompanied chorale for contrast.

I premiered Sonata in Mixolydian in this final version in the Winter of 1998 at the Crane School of Music during a Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Recital with my friends (and fellow Sinfonians) Dr. Steve Johnson on Piano and Brian Schneckenburger playing the English Horn part on Trumpet.
